4-Port Differential Phase Shift Microwave Circulators by Ferrite are available in frequencies ranging from 900 MHz to 45 GHz. FMT has a broad range of 4-Port devices, covering all standard industry bandwidths. We offer peak power as high as 25MW and average power levels into the hundreds of kilowatts. For applications with ultra-high average power levels, the footprint can be increased. The waveguide sizes available for 4-Port circulators range from WR28 to WR975.
4-Port Differential Phase Shift Circulators: FMT Designs
Ferrite Microwave Technologies offers 4-port differential phase shift circulator designs in both above and below resonance. The above resonance design allows for much lower insertion loss while also removing the possibility of non-linearity. The cooling medium is either air or liquid, depending on power levels and output mismatch conditions. In settings and environments where high peak power is present, pressurization is achievable with air, nitrogen or SF6.

FMT circulator and isolator interfaces cover all industry configurations, as well as mating to custom applications. Typically, these units are utilized in accelerators (scientific and medical), radar systems (isolators or duplexers), communication systems, and industrial settings for source protection with Magnetrons, TWT’s, Klystrons and Solid State Amplifiers.
Overview
Ferrite has a broad range of 4-Port Differential Phase Shift Circulators. It is important to note that FMT has temperature compensating materials for air cooled applications. For very high power applications, multiple phase shift sections can decrease the thermal stress and loading on the ferrite material.
FMT has also pioneered multi-phase shift sectioned assemblies using both E and H plane splitters. An example is in a WR-650 circulator, a 5 MW peak / 310 kW average power level was achieved while working into a 3:1 output mismatch. Another critical note, output mismatch does not affect input match, as can happen in a three port junction.
In Superconducting Radio Frequency (SCRF) Accelerator Technology applications, FMT recommends the use of a 4-Port Differential Phase Shift Microwave Circulator as preferential to a three port junction-style device. This is mostly due to its comparative invulnerability to the constant high reflected power levels, often found in an SCRF installation. Likewise, four port circulators have a greater ability manage these reflections without the need for external compensation.
